OFFSHORE WIND TURBINE PARKS


 Wind Turbine Arrays, also called wind farms, play an increasingly important role in the development of renewable energy sources.  As of today, marine wind turbines are an essential source of energy in Europe, as well as in other parts of the world.  European coasts are the ones with the most potential for growth, having the open shorelines with highly suitable wind patterns.  The most successful Wind Turbine Arrays are located on such coasts:

Offshore wind farms are usually constructed about 10 to 60 km away from the shoreline. Such a construction has a number of strategic advantages:

   - Wind farms aren’t visible from shore;
   - Do not have an actual real estate ‘footprint’; 
   - Are highly efficient due to the regular coastal winds.

Offshore wind farms are typically constructed on the lower-depths parts of the coast.  Support towers are mounted on the foundation, consisting of piles (stilts) submersed to the depth of up to 30 M.  Electricity is transmitted ashore through the underwater cables.

Here’s an example of one of wind parks (wind farms).  London Array, without a doubt, is the most famous offshore wind array in Great Britain.  The project that is expected to generate 1000 MW, is one of the largest ones in the world.  The actual wind array will be constructed in two stages.  It is anticipated that London Array will provide electricity for 750 000 households (about one quarter of the City of London, and will reduce the CO2 emissions by 1.5 million of tonnes per year. Wind Turbine Technician

Their role includes:      
    •    Fault finding and carrying out repairs to wind turbines.
    •    Replacing components and more complex repairs.
    •    Carrying out regular planned maintenance and inspections of wind turbines.
    •    Filling in reports and checklists.
    •    Keeping a regular check on stock of spare parts.

Salary of specialists working with such kind of equipment starts form 300 Eur/day.
